Welcome from our Chair and Program Director
Welcome to the University of Washington (UW) Psychiatry Residency Program! We are so glad you are interested in our program and the field of psychiatry. Thanks for taking the time to review our website.
You are needed.
We need more psychiatrists and psychiatric sub-specialists to provide compassionate, safe, and quality care for the growing mental health needs of our state, region, and world. We need excellent clinicians, teachers, scholars, and leaders to help educate the next generation of mental health professionals and transform our field through innovations in patient care, education, and research.
You are going to learn so much here.
We are so proud of the accomplishments of our more than 1,000 amazing faculty, staff, and trainees. Did you know that Dr. Marsha Linehan developed Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) here at the UW? Did you know that Collaborative Care, a form of integrated care, was developed here at UW by the late Dr. Wayne Katon. Many faculty in our department, including Dr. Jürgen Unützer, our chair, continue to do cutting edge and novel work in this area. Our faculty are also just very compassionate and nice people. Many of our residents and fellows remain on the faculty after graduation which is a wonderful testament to their positive experiences in our program. Our learning environments provide experiences with diverse clinical settings and patient populations and our wonderful staff is dedicated to making your training experience a truly great one.
You might just love this place.
Our program is located in Seattle, Washington, known as the Emerald City due to all the evergreen trees. Situated in the Pacific Northwest and surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes, and the Pacific Ocean, Seattle is an amazing place to live, work, play, and raise a family. And catching a glimpse of Mount Ranier never gets old.
Whether or not you choose our program (we hope you do!), thanks for taking the important step of pursuing psychiatry as your career choice.
Wishing you all the best in the recruitment process and your future careers!

Our Mission
The University of Washington Psychiatry Residency Program strives to create a diverse and inclusive learning community in service of the broad mission to improve the health of the public through delivery of behavioral health care to individuals and populations. To accomplish this goal we will: Train exceptional psychiatrists who can deliver evidence-based biological, psychological and social assessments and interventions. Prepare for the future of psychiatry by developing skills in population health, systems thinking, interprofessional work, research and innovation, including the use of technology. Create an educational environment that promotes the professional development, scholarship, mentoring and well-being of residents and faculty as life-long learners.
This website is intended to give you a brief overview of the program, including the clinical sites, curriculum, special opportunities, the resident group, and living in the Northwest.
