The Basics
Supervision is designed to help residents to learn the principles and practice of psychiatry. Residents are supervised throughout residency and are given graded and progressive responsibility according to their clinical experience, judgment, knowledge, and technical skill. Supervisors are drawn from over 350 regular faculty and over 500 clinical faculty.
Types of Supervision
- Attending supervision on inpatient, consult, and emergency services (on rounds and individually)
- Attending caseload supervision in outpatient clinics (group and/or individual)
- Group psychotherapy supervision
- Individual psychotherapy supervision (1 hour PGY-2 year, 2 hours PGY-3 year, and 1 hour PGY-4 year)
- Attending back-up supervision on call
Faculty Advisor
- Residents are assigned a faculty advisor for the duration of their training based on their stated interests. The resident can change advisors if desired.
- The faculty advisor assists in choosing rotations and in career planning.
- The faculty advisor serves as a resident advocate and career mentor.
